John Chayka has resigned as general manager of the Arizona Coyotes on the eve of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, the team announced on Sunday.

"John Chayka has quit as the General Manager and President of Hockey Operations of the Arizona Coyotes. The Club is disappointed in his actions and his timing as the Coyotes prepare to enter the NHL's hub city of Edmonton, where the team will begin post-season play for the first time since 2012," said the team in a statement. "Chayka has chosen to quit on a strong and competitive team, a dedicated staff, and the Arizona Coyotes fans, the greatest fans in the NHL."

When the NHL restarts its season on Aug. 1 in Toronto and Edmonton, neither commissioner Gary Bettman nor deputy commissioner Bill Daly will be on-site.

"Bill and I have actually put ourselves on the back burner because we don't have the requisite approvals to enter Canada or the bubble without a 14-day quarantine," Bettman said Friday during a news conference. "We also have an open question as to whether or not an owner or a senior executive of a club can come in and watch the games from outside the bubble. Those are questions that are still evolving."

There are many questions about the NHL's restarted season, and some were answered during Bettman's availability, including the fact that the commissioner will be the one to ultimately make the call on a player's eligibility if he tests positive for COVID-19 or needs to be quarantined for any reason.

The NHLPA and the NHL board of governors announced Friday night that they have approved a package that not only will allow the league to restart this summer but also includes a four-year CBA extension.

The NHLPA on Wednesday started a full membership vote on both return to play and the CBA, and voting concluded Friday.

The NHL is targeting Dec. 1 as the start of the 2020-21 season, according to a memorandum of understanding obtained by ESPN that is being voted on by NHL players. The league's board of governors also must approve it.

The Chicago Blackhawks say they will continue to use their team name because it honors a Native American leader who has been an inspiration to generations.

"The Chicago Blackhawks name and logo symbolizes an important and historic person, Black Hawk of Illinois' Sac & Fox Nation, whose leadership and life has inspired generations of Native Americans, veterans and the public," the NHL team said in a statement Tuesday.

The NHL and the NHL Players' Association have reached a tentative agreement on a return-to-play plan to restart the 2019-20 season and a memorandum of understanding that adds another four years to the term of the current collective bargaining agreement.

The NHL and NHLPA have finalized the protocols for the season to resume this summer in Toronto and Edmonton, Alberta, NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly told ESPN.

As of Sunday night, the sides still were finalizing the details of a memorandum of understanding for a collective bargaining agreement extension.

-Carolina Hurricanes president and general manager Don Waddell said Wednesday that executive Rick Dudley won't return and the team is still in talks with longtime TV play-by-play announcer John Forslund on a new deal.

The NHL has shifted its focus to selecting two Canadian hub cities, sources confirmed to ESPN.

That would have the NHL resuming its season in Toronto and Edmonton later this summer. Nothing is final until players vote on the return-to-play proposal, which is not expected to happen until later this week.

The NHL and NHLPA are also in discussions on an extension to the collective bargaining agreement, which has delayed any announcements.

NHL players who are due signing bonuses on July 1 are expected to be paid as scheduled, a source confirmed to ESPN.

There is more than $300 million due to be paid to players on Wednesday, with the Toronto Maple Leafs leading the league with roughly $60 million owed. Contracts structured with large signing bonuses have been in vogue in the NHL the past several years.
